Edible Plant Stems

Asparagus: is a native of African, European and Asian regions and is known as a vegetable crop. It contains no fat or cholesterol and has very little calories and small amount of sodium. Its edible stem is a rich source of potassium, folic acid, rutin, and dietary fibre. It is used to treat kidney stones and also urinary tract infections. It contains purine in large amounts and some could get an attack of gout.

Bamboo: is an evergreen plant of the grass family and is one of the most widely used stem plants in the world for decoration and consumption. It is cultivated and is commercially used as timber bamboo; it also is used as a garden plant. It is a popular Asian dish and are available both as canned and fresh. Bamboo is very popular in China and is also used in the treatment of infections. It is also used on construction of walls and also used as reinforcements.

Cinnamon: It is an evergreen tree which is native to Sri Lanka and is used as a spice because of its unique odour. There are several varieties of cinnamon: Cinnamomum multiforum, Cinnamomum ovalifolium, Cinnamom litseifolium Thw, and Cinnamom citriodorum. The main use of cinnamon is its bark, which is a spice. It is specially used in making chocolate in Mexico. It is used to treat colds and diarrhoea. It also has antimicrobial properties. It is also known for its insect-repelling property. But excessive use of the cinnamon may damage the taste buds, weaken gums, and also cause mouth ulcers.

Fig: It is a native of the tropical and temperate zones. The Common Fig is found in European and Middle East regions.
